The Parkdale Village BIA is hiring two (2) positions: Marketing Coordinator & Streetscape Assistant Coordinator; Position:  Marketing Coordinator, Parkdale Village Business Improvement Area (PVBIA) Employment Terms:  30 hours weekly at $14.00/hour for 8 weeks (This Canada Summer Jobs position is a Government of Canada initiative; to be eligible Student applicants must meet ALL criteria) The Parkdale Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) represents over 350 businesses and property owners in Parkdale Village along Queen Street West from Dufferin Street to Roncesvalles Avenue, providing diverse retail shopping opportunities and excellent entertainment venues. Our dining establishments reflect the character of Toronto, in that you can find food from every corner of the planet here: from Tibet to the Caribbean and more. We have a thriving vintage and antique shopping district in our west end that anchors our sense of history and there are several galleries in Parkdale that display the amazing talents of the many artists who live in the neighbourhood. Overview of Position: Working closely with the Executive Director, the Marketing Coordinator will work to support some of the BIA’s Marketing & Communications initiatives. Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Developing online content concepts from idea to completion
  • Preparing creative copy for enewsletters and website articles
  • Taking photos for website articles
  • Assisting with development of social and digital media content
  • Updating website directory
  • Preparing analytics reports
  • Developing and managing media contact database
  • Editing print directory brochure
  • Contributing to the coordination of other areas and initiatives as directed
Experience and Competencies Required: 
  • Secondary, post-secondary, CEGEP (Quebec only), vocational or technical program; (preferably in the areas of Public Relations, Communications, Marketing)
  • Experience working with platforms such as MailChimp, WordPress and Hootsuite
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including copy-writing
  • An understanding of social media, blogs, websites, magazines, newspapers, television, etc (as they relate to Fashion, Food and Culture an asset)
  • Experience creating Video and Audio content
  • Excellent computer skills (Internet searches, Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint)
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Interest in local community and non-profit organizations
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders, including local businesses & community groups
  • Ability to arrange your own travel and be able to spend extended periods standing and walking along Queen Street West.
  • May be required to lift up to 30 pounds
Favourable Assets:
  • Previous copywriting experience (either for social media, or blogs/websites)
  • Knowledge of Parkdale Village community and businesses
  • Personal Laptop
Eligible Criteria: This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs; to be eligible Student applicants must meet ALL criteria;
  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • have been registered as a full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
  • is a student in a secondary, post-secondary, CEGEP (Quebec only), vocational or technical program;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act2; and,

Overview of Position: Working closely with the Planning Coordinator, the Streetscape Assistant Coordinator will work to support the BIA’s mandate to improve, maintain, and progress a vibrant and safe public realm in Parkdale. The greater part of this program will be to undertake an audit of all BIA-owned streetscape assets and other street infrastructure as necessary, to identify maintenance needs, program gaps, and current condition of assets. Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collecting, recording, and tracking data
  • Conducting audit of Streetscape items: BIA Banners; BIA Flower Brackets; BIA Decorative Bike Posts; BIA Gardens; BIA Pedestrian Lights (lamps and clamp-ons); BIA Flower Planters; BIA Decorative Bike Posts; City Benches and Public Seating; City Bike Rings; Bike Share Stations; Transit Shelters; Litter Bins; Murals; Public Telephones; Trees; Street Signs
  • Accurate record-keeping and data input of information including: location, identifying information, condition of asset, maintenance needs, etc.
  • Provide support to Planning Coordinator as needed
  • Work with Executive Director and Planning Coordinator to research new programs and projects
  • Provide administrative support as necessary (filing, maintaining office organization, taking messages etc.)
  • Contributing to the coordination of other areas and initiatives as directed.
Experience and Competencies Required: 
  • Post-Secondary (Community College, CEGEP, Technical Institute, University)
  • Strong customer service with superior interpersonal oral and written communication skills.
  • General understanding, interest and experience in urban planning, economic development or relevant disciplines and administrative processes
  • Interest in community, local-level planning, and non-profit organizations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, community groups and members.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Outstanding organizational and planning skills with strong attention to detail
  • Proven ability to balance multiple assignments and tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to arrange your own travel and be able to spend extended periods standing and walking along Queen Street West.
  • May be required to lift up to 20 pounds
Favourable Assets:
  • Experience supporting community level coordination of projects or events.
  • Experience with surveying.
  • Experience with customer service.
  • Knowledge of Parkdale Village community and businesses.
  • Proficiency or familiarity with GIS/mapping software
